Song 5 Self Remix

May 9, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

For the self-remix, I remixed my first song.  I really only added in a couple more beats and drum loops toward the middle and the end to layer up the sound.  I think the beats added gave a little higher sounding beats.  Which changes it up a bit because I feel that it was originally… Continue reading Song 5 Self Remix

Song 2 Midi

May 9, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

This song was pretty difficult to do on SoundTrap.  I came up with a drum beat on the Groove Pizza.  Then I found a midi file of Gershwin’s “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” which I thought would be funky and could possibly go with the beat from the Groove Pizza. The Drums from the… Continue reading Song 2 Midi

Sampling Ethics

May 9, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

Do you think that sampling without permission is morally acceptable? If so, why? If not, why not? After working with electronic music this semester, I feel like it depends if it is acceptable.  For me, I would find it a little more acceptable if I am making a piece of music for fun and not… Continue reading Sampling Ethics

Real vs hyperreal vs surreal

May 9, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

Choose a “realistic” recording, one that accurately represents the sound of people performing live. It could be an actual live recording, or a studio recording with a live sound. What makes it sound realistic? This is a “realistic” recording of Jimmy Buffett performing “Margaritaville.”  It sounds realistic with the imbalance of instruments to vocals and… Continue reading Real vs hyperreal vs surreal

Mobile Song Process

April 18, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

For my mobile song, I used GarageBand on my iPhone.  It was definitely an interesting, slightly frustrating experience, but I caught on to the process in the end. Because of the limited viewing space of my phone, I had to get used to the fact that I did not have to drag multiple loops out… Continue reading Mobile Song Process

Peer Remix

April 4, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

For my peer remix, I chose Hope’s first Loop Song.  I liked it for it’s chill feel, and thought I could add more to it to help set more of a beat to it. When the pan flutes come in, I wanted to add extra percussion to it to really add to the groove.  There… Continue reading Peer Remix

Production Analysis

March 29, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

For my production analysis, I chose to focus on Toto’s “Africa,” one of my favorite songs.   In my research for this post, Toto’s process of making this song was an interesting read.   The producers were the members of Toto, with vocalist/keyboardist David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro noted as the writers of the… Continue reading Production Analysis

Found Sound Song Process

March 28, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

For my Found Sound song, I used my own phone recording of taking something out of its wrapping and warming it in the microwave.  There were some elements of the recording that I thought could use as different percussive sounds. First I thought the unwrapping sound could portray a sort of vinyl scratch sound (although… Continue reading Found Sound Song Process

Sample Genealogy

1  Daft Punk’s “One More Time” takes its samples from Eddie Johns’ “More Spell on You.”  Daft Punk splices up and repeats the brass section of Johns’ song throughout “One More Time” to provide musical accompaniment for their song. 2  Here is an example of a song quotation/interpolation: I’ll be Missing you–Puff Daddy ft. Faith… Continue reading Sample Genealogy

Beatmaking/Groove Pizza

February 20, 2017 Jessica AlcidLeave a comment

Groove Pizza link: https://apps.musedlab.org/groovepizza/?source=pub&museid=HJDM4AOKg I’m not too sure what musical genre this would belong to.  But, I think it fit the techno drum kit well, or the hip-hop one.  I feel like it could maybe work with the Afro-Latin kit as well because of a slight son clave feel.
